According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), an estimated 26.8 million workdays were lost due to work related health issues last year. Whilst many of these were physical problems and arguably could not be prevented, a high percentage was stress, depression or anxiety related. And for smaller employers, the loss of even one member of staff for extended periods can have a significant impact on your business.
Giving due consideration to the health and wellbeing of your staff will help to reduce work related absences. And a healthy and well-motivated workforce will clearly be more productive.
For many employers, the “health” element here will be a more familiar and comfortable area. Health goes hand-in-hand with Safety, and providing a safe and healthy working environment for your staff should be second nature. However, Health and Safety tends to focus on preventing physical injury, rather than the overall wellness of your employees.
We have talked elsewhere about Employee Engagement and how it can have a positive (or negative!) impact on your business. By making sure that you consider the wellbeing of your staff, and by having obvious measures in place to monitor this, you can improve feelings of appreciation, commitment and motivation in your workforce.
